REFERENCE PERSON (ARTIST)
KONSTANTIN DIMOPOULOS
Born in Port Said, Egypt in 1954. In 1962, Dimopoulos moved with his family to Wellington, New Zealand and is now residing in Melbourne, Australia.
Dimopoulos was graduated from Victoria University in Wellington and studied Sociology. He worked as a social worker with the elderly for a period of time.
Dimopoulos then later continued studying at Chelsea School of Art in London, UK.
After graduating Dimopoulos established his name as a painter and began to explore movements through the medium of sculpture and then was awarded the Inaugural Wellington Civic Initiative for sculpture with Trust for the City of Wellington.
Later on, Dimopoulos also creates installation arts mainly based on social and environmental themes including his very own controversial public artwork, The Blue Trees about deforestation.
In 2005, Dimopoulos was awarded the Arts Victoria Celebrate Victoria Grant for The Blue Trees installation in Melbourne which was stopped at the last minute by Melbourne city councillors and was instead created at a private site.
In year 2009, Dimopoulos was commissioned by Festival Director, Robyn Archer to create a new installation as part of Light in Winter Festival for 2009 at Federation Square, Melbourne, Australia. Black Partheon raises the issue of the appropriate and repatriation of cultural objects and religions relics.
Next, in the mid of year 2010, The Vancouver Biennale invited Dimopoulos to create The Blue Trees as a part of their performances art program.
