COLOUR AND DESIGN TWO AND THREE DIMENTION

Task 1 (Rainbow Color)

The Color of Rainbows:
-          Red
-          Orange
-          Yellow
-          Green
-          Blue
-          Indigo
-          Violet

Light and color can influence how people perceive the area around them. Different light sources affect how the colors of walls and other objects are seen. Specific hues of colors seen under natural sunlight may vary when seen under the light from an incandescent (tungsten) light-bulb: lighter colors may appear to be more orange or “brownish” and darker colors may appear even darker. Light and color of an object can affect how one perceives its positioning. If light or shadow, or the color of the object, masks an object’s true contour (outline of a figure) it can appear to be shaped differently from reality. Objects under a uniform light-source will promote better impression of three-dimensional shape. The color of an object may affect whether or not it seems to be in motion. In particular, the trajectories of objects under a uniform light source. This could possibly be interpreted as interference between motion and color perception, both of which are more difficult under variable lighting. (By: Carl Jung, color psychology)

For my first task, I am required to prove a statement provided by Carl Jung, a color psychologist. Below, I will show images to prove and confirm of the phenomenon takes places.

Light and color can influence how people perceive the area around them.

Figure.3

The wavelength of the reflected light determines the color that we see. For example when a banana is peeled, the light waves will reflect off the banana and hit on the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eyes and that is how we can see colors through our eyes.

Different light sources affect how the colors of walls and other objects are seen.

Objects under a uniform light-source will promote better impression of a three-dimensional shape

Figure 7.
Uniform light can be printed in a static shadow and in result, it allows the eyes to precisely accurately pinpoint to the edges and the height of the object using the shadow and surface of the object by the tone of the color on the object.

The color of an object may affect whether or not it seems to be in motion.

Figure 11.

If an object is in motion or moving, the color of the object may create a blurry effect which also is known as motion blur. The effect will be seen only if the object is moving in an extremely fast speed or the camera is set with a slow setting.

In particular, the trajectories of objects under a light source whose intensify varies with space are more difficult to determine than identical objects under a uniform light source. This could possibly be interpreted as interference between motion and color perception, both of which are more difficult under variable lighting.

Due to the “interference between motion and color perception” same objects will become different when they are in motion. For example when the object is moving under a light source, the tone and shadow will change according to the positioning of the object and at the same time, changes how the eyes interpret the object shape and color with an identical object.

Above is the outcome of my Task 1 exercise which I am required to set a theme and using a camera capture images to create my own spectrum color. I have a result of origami theme and rainbow for my theme. The image above is capture using different film of color film paper using a camera and editing in Adobe Photoshop to combine in repetitive format to create it.

Task 2 (Spectrum of Colors)
Color psychology is a study of color to determine the human behavior as colors are to be said to have mental and physical effect on human. According to Leslie Harrington form the Color Association of United Kingdom, has stated that colors will influence how one feels for some reasons, personal preference and also cultural or social levels. For example, “when you look at blue, your mood will be down and feel moody.”

RED
The color RED has the longest wavelength among all the colors and is often being said as the most powerful or strong color in the spectrum. RED is not the most visible color but it has a property to attract attention just like the red wording on warning signboards all around the world. On physical effect wise, RED has an effect of when being looked on, it increases ones heart rate and also make time moves faster. The color RED possesses two types of qualities which is it gives a friendly and lively stimulation but also can at the same time gives an aggressive and demanding feeling.

Positives: Courage, Strength, Warmth, Energy, Excitement, Stimulation, Masculinity.
Negatives: Defiance, Aggression, Visual Impact, Strain.

BLUE
BLUE is often said to be an intellectual color, also known as the color of mind. Unlike RED color, The BLUE color has mental effect on us and it stimulates the physical reaction. Different level of blues determines different feels. For example, a strong BLUE instill clear thoughts while soft BLUE gives a calming type of effect which helps when in concentration. Even though BLUE gives us a calming expression, but it might also perceives cold, unfriendly and unemotional (feeling blue) expressions.

Positives: Intelligence, Communication, Trust, Efficiency, Serenity, Duty, Logic, Coolness, Reflection, Calm.
Negatives: Loneliness, Unfriendliness, Coldness, Emotionless, Moody.

YELLOW
YELLOW has a similar wavelength like RED which stimulates emotion. Psychologically, YELLOW is at the top and with the correct tone of color, it can help promote ones self-esteem and also spirits. But however, using too much or a wrong tone of YELLOW, will cause anxiety, fear and also when comes to worst results in lower self-esteem.

Positives: Optimism, Confidence, Self-esteem, Emotional Strength, Friendliness, Creativity.
Negatives: Irrationality, Fear, Emotional Fragility, Depression, Anxiety, Suicide.
GREEN
GREEN is at the center of the spectrum color and it represents balance. Without any restraints, the color will strike the eyes and giving a resting, comfortable feel. Often people calls GREEN as the color of relaxation and also considered as the color of life because our Earth is covered mostly in greenery which indicates life. However, nothing is perfect because GREEN also will make people feel bland and bored.

Positives: Harmony, Balance, Refreshment, Rest, Restoration, Reassurance, Environmental Awareness, Equilibrium, Peace.
Negatives: Boredom, Stagnation, Blandness.

3D Emotion Box Project
Emotion Box Sketch
Colors used: White (outer circle), Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, Black.
Materials: Ring, Ping Pong balls, Color and Non-color Strings, Ring Circle.
To make this Emotion box, I choose to have white for the outer circle is because everything we see before it reflects with light is white. The colors inside represents the psychology colors that we see which is Red, Blue, Green and Yellow which represents many emotions all in one. The black in the middle represents all the emotions color combination resulting in no color which is black. The color strings represents different feeling coming out of the human brain.

Digital Image of the Emotion Box

Final project

Due to some material problem, the final outcome of my emotion box I different because I made some corrections. As the concept is still the same, the emotion box now is rectangle but the white remains the same meaning. I have reduce the black in the emotion box and keep only the psychology colors.

MONOCHROME
We are required to create a monochrome storyboard. The color theme I chose is RED.

Below is the outcome of organizing the pictures that I have taken based on the order they are taken.
